Like Raiden, he’s lost his memory- Raiden didn’t suffer a head injury, but both are dissociated from their former selves due to severe trauma. Venom was a medic, haunted by his inability to save Paz and the final, brutal moments he remembers before his near-fatal head injury. He clearly wants to be a badass, he wants to be Solid Snake, but he doesn’t quite have that in him. He’s also someone who was, shortly before the game, essentially shaped into an adult by video games, technology, and propaganda. Raiden is haunted by his time as a child soldier, struggling so severely to cope with his past and the people he killed that he detached himself from his Jack the Ripper persona and unconsciously buried away many of his memories. They’ve both suffered greatly because of their time in combat. Raiden and Venom are both veterans before the game begins. This is exemplified in no better place than in the main characters themselves. MGS2 and V are both powerful pieces of anti-war, anti-violence, anti-authoritarian commentary, both revolve heavily around the very concept of using art as a medium to express both these ideas and the dangers that follow from art that expresses the opposite, and both are about suffering with dissociative disorders and PTSD- and I would argue that your feelings prove that MGSV succeeded at what it was trying to do. MGSV is, in my opinion, the true ending of the series: a bleak reinterpretation of the same themes and ideas that formed the basis for the first ending of the series, MGS2. MGSV, much like MGS2, bills itself as the latter only to subvert expectations and turn into the former by the ending. Lots of fans exclusively prefer the latter, often times they’ll refer to MGS3 as the best, and it’s in these cases where people tend to get frustrated or upset about the former leaking into their crazy action fun times. The latter represents what Kojima likes, the former represents Kojima’s thoughts.

The second is a big, fun, dumb action movie that’s equal parts anime and American 80s films. The first is a postmodern, meta as fuck story about politics, science, psychology, video games, franchises, and Kojima himself.

Metal Gear, for better and for worse, is a series with two faces. There’s plenty of well-written art that I dislike and I’m sure everyone has something like that. That doesn’t mean you have to like it, of course. Obviously, opinions and all, but I do think that if you’re calling it “poorly written”, you’re misunderstanding it.
